At East Stour Primary School we acknowledge the value of Science in every phase of our daily life. Our vision for the children is to empower them to explore and discover the world around them so provisions are made for high-quality opportunities for the children in order to develop their Scientific Skills.

In EYFS, science is taught as part of the “Understanding the World” strand of learning where we focus on children making sense of things by observing and exploring everything from the places they spend time to the technology and other things that they use. This is a mixture of continuous provision activities and adult-led learning. This structure continues into Year 1 before progressing on to a more formal style from Year 2 onwards.

The science curriculum content is delivered to ensure that children can acquire key scientific knowledge in a child-centred way and lessons are differentiated appropriately to provide access and challenge for all children. We also focus on practical experiences; using equipment, conducting experiments, building arguments and explaining concepts confidently.

The national curriculum for science aims to ensure that all pupils:

  • Develop scientific knowledge and conceptual understanding through the specific disciplines of biology, chemistry and physics
  • Develop understanding of the nature, processes and methods of science through different types of science enquiries that help them to answer scientific questions about the world around them
  • Are equipped with the scientific knowledge required to understand the uses and implications of science, today and for the future.

At East Stour Primary school science is fun, enquiry based, national curriculum driven and catering for all learning needs. East Stour children are free to think, express and explore.

Children find science extremely inspiring and interesting and the teaching of science offers them the ability to access a wealth of knowledge which will contribute to an overall understanding of how and why things work like they do. Engaging our children with exciting material and experiences motivates them to learn and pursue the sciences throughout school. Every half term we put up a challenge for the children to work on at home.
