History Curriculum

We believe at East Stour, that a well rounded history curriculum will allow our pupils to gain a wide range of knowledge and understanding of Britain’s past and the wider world. Our history curriculum is carefully designed around our children so they can progress through the years, developing their knowledge and understanding to become historians. At East Stour, our intent when teaching history is to engage, excite and empower the children in their learning, whilst developing critical and disciplinary skills.

Through finding out about how and why the world, our country, culture and local community have developed over time, children understand how the past influences the present. Our versatile curriculum enables children to develop a context for their growing sense of identity and a chronological framework for their knowledge of significant events and people. What they learn through history can influence their decisions about personal choices, attitudes and values, aspirations and understanding of how to be a good and responsible citizen.

Our curriculum aims to enable all children, regardless of background, ability, additional needs, to become the very best historians that they can possibly be. We teach the National Curriculum, supported by a clear skills and knowledge progression. This ensures that skills and knowledge are built on year by year and sequenced appropriately to maximise learning for all children. It is important that the children develop progressive skills of a historian throughout their time at East Stour and do not just learn a series of facts about the past. In History, pupils at East Stour find evidence, weigh it up and reach their own conclusion. To do this successfully, as historians, they need to be able to research, interpret evidence, including primary and secondary sources, and have the necessary skills to argue for their point of view; skills that will help them in their adult life. To complement the history curriculum, there are visiting workshops, themed class events and educational visits, which enhance pupils understanding and provide varied learning experiences.
