In year 4, we follow the National Curriculum with the core subjects of English, Mathematics, Science, Computing and further foundation subjects – History, Geography, Design & Technology, Art, Music, Physical Education and Personal, Social Health Education and Religious Education. As well as an emphasis on integrating our value of the term within our classrooms such as ‘Optimism’, ‘Resilience’, ‘Ambition’ and ‘Empowered’.

In Maths we use the White Rose Maths scheme. This scheme encourages number confidence and has a strong emphasis on the four number operations. This scheme provides the students with the opportunity to develop their fluency, reasoning and problem solving skills.

Our literacy lessons are based around a book, following the Pathways to Write Programme. In combination to this, we use VIPERS to support guided reading lessons. Each lesson we discuss the book through targeted questions on Vocabulary, Inference, Prediction, Explanation, Retrieval and Summary. Throughout the year our aim is to develop the children’s spoken language, reading comprehension, spellings and writing composition.

Spellings are set weekly on the Seesaw app and practiced every morning during the morning registration. In addition, times tables are set weekly on the Seesaw app and practised using interactive games every Friday. Apart from spellings and times tables, reading at home remains important and we encourage children to read every day. Listening to your child read on a daily basis will be crucial to his or her progress.

PE is delivered twice a week – Mondays (indoors) and Thursday (outdoors).

Trainers or plimsolls are to be worn to school on Monday and full PE kit on a Thursday.

Each term we have a different topic and our foundation subjects are taught through topics such as ‘This is me!’, ‘Raiders and Traders!’, ‘Rainforest Explorers!’ and ‘Planet Earth!’.
