Special Educational Needs

East Stour Primary School is committed to providing the best possible education for all abilities of pupils.

The school is committed to having many established strategies for helping pupils learn and integrate within the school if they are having difficulties. Miss Charlesworth, our SENCO, is responsible for ensuring the well-being of these children.

  • We have one mobile classroom on site which is used for our Nurture Provision – The Rainbow Room. This is staffed by two qualified members of staff, Mrs Nash & Mrs Elliott. They provide small group support for children who are struggling to cope in the main classroom. This can be academic or emotional support and is usually for a fixed period of time, ensuring smooth transition back to the classroom.
  • Speech & Language support for younger pupils (Foundation Stage and Key Stage 1). Pupils are taught in the class setting as well as in small groups. Support is also provided for children in KS2 and staff implement strategies provided by the NHS Speech & Language Therapy Service.
  • English as an Additional Language – we build on the children’s cultural and linguistic experiences to develop their understanding and use of English.Parents of children with physical or sensory impairment are asked to give the school details of the situation as soon as they are offered a place at the school. Mrs Scott & Miss Charlesworth, will arrange a meeting at a mutually convenient time to discuss the ways in which the child’s impairment might hinder her/him from taking a full part in the life of the school and the ways in which such difficulties will be overcome.

Miss Charlesworth will then make arrangements necessary to enable the child to participate fully in all lessons and activities. These arrangements may include briefing the staff, obtaining special equipment, making minor adaptions to the building including rearranging furniture and/or employing additional support staff. These may take time to put into place and may require advice and assistance from the education office or specialist agencies, so parents are urged to speak to the school as soon as possible so that everything can be ready for the child’s first day here.

As of September 1st 2014 a new Code of Practice for children with Special Educational Needs and Disabilities (SEND) was introduced by the Government with statutory guidance for schools following the changes made to the “Children and Families Act 2014”.

Part of the changes made include a requirement that all local authorities produce a “Local Offer” outlining what the authority offer to support children with SEND. You can find this by clicking on the following link: http://www.kent.gov.uk/education-and-children/special-educational-needs

As a school we are also required to set out our own “Local Offer” setting out what our school will do to support children with SEND. This is set out in our SEND Policy.
